Don't Kill the Dream at the Dinner Table

When it comes to athletics, there are a few tips every parent of a young athlete should know. For starters, parents make sure your child is receiving proper training via a personal trainer or close supervision of their athletic coach. In addition young athletes should be aware of their nutrition and proper hydration in order to achieve peak performance. With any child that participates in athletics, breakfast is a necessary meal! Breakfast should be a healthy meal (heavy plant base, no dairy, no sugar) including at least 16 ounces of water. Follow-up training (i.e. practice) with proper refueling of the body through healthy meals (no breads, dairy or sugar) and hydration.

Training tips:

Eat healthy meals. A healthy meal includes lots of fresh vegetables, lean meats (free range poultry, wild caught fish, grass feed beef), fruits and other healthy proteins found in beans.

Avoid garbage foods. Products containing high fructose corn syrup, fried foods, and snack foods with more than six ingredients all qualify as garbage foods in my book.

Drink water, spring water. Young athletes should drink at least half their body weight in ounces of good clean water per day. An emphasis on clean water here because a majority of our tap water has large amounts of chlorine as well as drug byproducts which are not able to be filtered with current public works technology.

Avoid energy drinks. High sugar, high caffeine and carbonated drinks all take away from the body’s overall long-term function.

Be aware of sports drinks, they often contain high levels of sugar. If they must be consumed, pour out half of the drink and refill it with water, this brink the drink a little closer to beneficial electrolytes.

Avoid excessive amounts of dairy. Dairy and the typical athletic event do not go together well. Many people support dairy with the calcium argument, however, many sources of calcium may be reached through fresh vegetables and fruit.

My recommendation for a multivitamin is the organic sufficiency powder from Innate Choice. This powder can be used in a smoothie, or mixed with juice. Click here if you are interested in purchasing.

Avoid the “enhanced supplements”. Many of the have undetermined effects on the human body that have not yet been studied or research.

Get a good nights rest and sleep eight hours minimum for young athletes is best any less can show up over a long period of time it may not be immediate however it will display within a matter of weeks and decrease performance.

Stay balanced! Utilize chiropractic services to assist you in taking your athletic abilities to the next level.

Pass the Butter

This is a copy of an email that I received from a relative, very interesting.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.

It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

  • Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.
  • Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
  • Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
  • Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
  • Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods.
  • Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..

  • Very High in Trans fatty acids.
  • Triples risk of coronary heart disease .
  • Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
  • Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
  • Lowers quality of breast milk.
  • Decreases immune response.
  • Decreases insulin response. And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
  • Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to butter them up')!

Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.

Pass the BUTTER PLEASE

"Free the Mind, Heal the Body, I'm talking Evolution" part 2 - Jay Elect

In a previous post I mentioned that a book written in the 1960's contained a large quantity of information that is just now becoming "main stream" today. One of the topics discuss included the consumption of nuts. The author of the text recommended that humans not consume nuts of any kind because of the difficulty digesting them and because they could be very harsh to the stomach. Nuts can be difficult to digest, sometimes causing bloating, gas and even allergic reactions. The reason for this is that the enzyme inhibitors of the nuts force the pancreas to work overtime, this stresses the pancres and slows digestion causing bloating. This is important because over time you will begin to depleate you enzyme reserves and begin having difficulty digesting vegetables like brocolli, califlour and other cruciferous vegetables.

How can you overcome the inhibitors? There are two ways to bypass the inhibitors, one way is to roast the nuts, the other is to "sprout" them. Roasting is what is most commonly used, however, the process defeats the purpose of consuming nuts because it denatures the proteins that we can derive from their consumption. Aside from killing all the proteins, they are heavily salted. Sprouting is more of a time consuming process but you are still left with all the nutrients and none of the enzyme inhibitors. My recommendation is to purchase nuts in their "raw" form, unsalted.

The sprouting process begins with a 8-12 hours soaking of them in spring water. After soaking, rinse and spread them out to dry. If you like the crunch you get from eating nuts you're going to need to purchase a dehydrator. The dehydrator should not be set above 105 degrees fahrenheit, the process will take between 24-48 hours depending on what type of nuts or seeds you have in the dehydrator.

When the process is complete, refrigerate what you do not plan on consuming within five days. Tip, if you just have to have the salt, sprinkle a little sea salt or Himalayan salt on them before you begin the dehydration process.

In the article Weiner's Pain Management A Practical Guide for Clinicians by Boswell and Cole, links to diet and pain have been made. There are two essential fatty acids (EFA) that are the focus, Omega 6 and Omega 3. Omega 6 EFA's are associated with inflammation which is linked to pain. Omega 3 EFA's are anti-inflammatory and necessary for the proper cell communication. Historically the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 were nearly 1:1, in the 1900's the ratio jumped to 4:1. With an annual increase of vegetable oil consumption of nearly 2 pounds per year since 1909 current ratios of Omega 6 to Omega 3 are 25:1 for the average american.

This is the cause of many American's chronic pain issues, commonly treated with steroids, aspirin and other NSAIDs they only perpetuate the cycle since many of them prevent the formation of the "good" omega 3's from forming. Maintaining a proper balance (similar to 1:1) between Omega fats can be a very important measure in reducing the likelihood of developing a chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome and other autoimmune diseases associated with lifestyle.

If you would like to know your ratios, there is a company I know that can test them for you.

9 food additives to Avoid !

Because we live in a world of microwave, fast and/or restaurant "foods", its not too often we consider the cost of what we are putting into our bodies. The following is a list of 9 food additives which we should be aware of that are commonly found in commercial foods. Most of these are cancer causing, linked to cancer or precursors to tumors.

Sodium Nitrate (or Nitrite)
A preservative, coloring and flavoring commonly added to bacon, ham, hotdogs, lunch meats, smoked fish and corn beef.

BHA and BHT
A preservative found in cereal, chewing gum, potato chips and vegetble oils.

Propyl Gallate
Often used with BHA, this is sometimes found in meat products, chicken soup and chewing gum.

MSG
A flavor enhancer found in salad dressings, chips and restaurant food. It can cause headaches and nausea. Fibromyalgia Studies have found that complete or near complete relief could be attained by removing all MSG and aspartame containing foods and drinks from suffers of fibromyalgia.

Aspartame
Also known by Nutrasweet and Equal is found in low-calorie desserts, gelatins, drink mixes and soda. This can also cause neurological problems such as dizziness or hallucinations.

Acesulfame-K
An artificial sweetener found in baked goods, chewing gum and gelatin desserts.

Food Colorings
Blue 1,2; Red 3; Green; Yellow 5,6. These are found in beverages, candy, baked goods, fruit cocktail and candy. These have been linked to asthma, thyroid tumors, adrenal and kidney issues.

High Fructose Corn Syrup
Linked to a number of health issues. Found in beverages, snack foods, etc.

Sodium Chloride
Also known as table salt. Found in many of your "low fat" foods. Linked to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.

The Challenge
For one week, free yourself from anti-perspirant and replace it with baking soda.

The Gift
Red Wave Smoothie
  • 1/2 Cup Frozen Cherries
  • 1/2 Cup Frozen Mango
  • 1/4 Cup Golgi Berries
  • 2 tbsp Organic Sufficiency (innate choice multi-vitamin powder)
  • 1 1/4 Cup Almond or Hemp Milk
  • Add all the ingredients to the blender and enjoy.

No MSG for me, but I want you to see

Monosodium glutamate also known as MSG is the sodium salt of glutamic acid. Glutamic acid occurs naturally in many foods and is broken down slowly in the digestive process. MSG, which is produced by fermenting sugar beet molasses, is a additive which fools the brain into thinking something tastes better than it actually does.

In the 1960's a scientist, John Olney, discovered that MSG destroyed retinal cells in addition to killing vital neurons within the brain by exciting them to death. Our bodies can handle the glutamic acid found in many foods because of the blood-brain barrier. However, when high concentrations of glutamic acid (via msg) tip the balance of our blood, the blood brain barrier can be compromised.

One area of the brain that is susceptible to damage is the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus houses the control systems for the endocrine glands (Thyroid =metabolism, Pancreas=insulin regulation, Ovaries/Testes = reproduction, Adrenal glands = blood pressure/kidney function), sleep-wake cycles (i.e. insomnia) and the limbic system of emotional presentation (i.e. depression). You could say there are a few common health issues here that appear to be on the rise.

The following is a list of Hidden Names for MSG. This list is of factory created substances which contain at least 78% msg. Last time I checked 70% was a passing grade but the government only requires msg to be listed as msg if it is over 90% pure.

  • Monopotassium glutamate
  • Glutamate
  • Glutamic Acid
  • Vegetable Protein Extract
  • Gelatin
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)
  • Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP)
  • Autolyzed Plant Protein
  • Sodium Caseinate
  • Senomyx (wheat extract labeled as artificial flavor)
  • Calcium Caseinate
  • Textured Protein
  • Yeast Extract
  • Yeast food or nutrient
  • Autolyzed Yeast

The Challenge
Take a closer look at your grocery list. Read the labels of the foods you purchase and make the decision to put your health first. Start your friends and family on the road toward better health.

The Gift
Summer CooLoff
This one is for your juicer:
3 gala apples
1 pear (ripe = a little soft)
5 large strawberries

Juice 2 of the apples first and the third one last. If this is for two, double your contents.

"Free the Mind, Heal the Body, I'm talking Evolution" part 1 - Jay Elect

Healing takes place from the inside out and our "belief" systems often keep us from reaching our potential. There are a number of books out today that discuss living to 100 years of age. This is a popular topic that applies old wisdom.

In the 1960 there was a book written by a "uneducated" man that contained a number of health tips that I am beginning to see again in various forms. I will elaborate on a few of them for part one of this blog, they are as follows:

Reframe from Eating Pork
Diabetics on insulin can use the insulin of pigs because of their genetic similarities. If our genes are that similar to those of a pig it's a stretch for me to believe the protein of a pig can be of benefit. We are seeing a lot of health issues from consuming pork and they far out weight any "benefits". We the genetic similarities (similar proteins, etc) are we setting ourselves up for diseases such as lupus?

Reframe from Eating Nuts (Peanuts)
In the book he states nuts because they are difficult to digest, however, peanuts have been known to contain a fungus called an aflatoxin. This fungus has been researched in relation to Reye's Syndrome in children and Parkinson's Disease in adults as a possible link.

Eat One Meal a Day
Who ever said three meals a day should be the standard? The "Mediterranean Diet" was based on the people of Crete during the 1950's. During this time frame, these people were very active, fasted on a regular basis and had a significantly lower caloric intake (they ate less) than our standard diet.

QUOTE
In todays society, what is considered "Normal" is "Foreign" to our genetics!! ~Dr J

THE CHALLENGE
Anti-perspirant as been discussed in health circles for its aluminum content and the correlation to alzheimer's. Your challenge is to drop your anti-perpirant and replace it with baking soda. Dip two fingers in the baking soda and spread it under your arm, you don't need much. Try it for at least a week, if it all works out stick with it!

THE GIFT
Fruit Fresh Mix
Mix the following fruits together in a large bowl, cover and refrigerate.
Blueberries, Raspberries, sliced Strawberries, red & green Grapes and Watermelon.

Distrubing the Peace

The other day I saw a television commercial for High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). The commercial starts with two young men sitting at a kitchen table when one says "you're eating that? you know what they say about HFCS?" and his friends response is: " what?, that it has the same nutritional value as sugar and it's ok in moderation."

First, sugar is an addictive substance that has very little to no nutritional value in the common form of white granulated sugar, it's empty calorie. Second, HFCS has some that sugar doesn't, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). HMF is what forms when HCFS is cooked and jumps dramatically when heated beyond 120 degrees Fahrenheit. HMF was discovered by bee keepers, who were feeding honey bees HFCS because it "has the nutritional value of sugar,"i.e. calories, and it's cheap. Although bees have been feed HFCS for decades, it's very possible that the compounding chemical assault could be wiping the honey bee population out. Perhaps that's why it's only ok in "moderation".

So what does this mean for you? Researchers of the bee study stated that this information is important for humans for two reasons.
1. HMF has been linked to DNA damage
2. When HMF breaks down in the human body it breaks down into substances that may be even more harmful.

One idea is that HFCS consumption interferes with intracellular communication, causing physiological disruption which is expressed as diseases like "diabetes" or "obesity".

What should you look for?
HFCS is found in a majority of packaged "foods" and dinning facilities. Common items include, BBQ sauce, Ketchup, Soda, Whole wheat breads, salad dressings, canned fruits, etc. This list can go on for a while, my suggestions is to read the ingredients before you buy and look at what you have already purchased.
An even better suggestion, decrease the frequency of eating outside the home and eat more foods which are uncooked and unprocessed (i.e. vegetables and fruits).

Fitness in a pill, I think not!

What you see above is the Acai fruit in its natural state. There are a number of health claims (i.e. diet supplements) that state acai berry is the secret to their weight loss pill. This was worth a brief investigation since the only real way to lose weight is to get fit and stay fit, this means staying active.

AcaiBerry Pure contains caffeine as the second most prevalent ingredient in the supplement after green tea extract. The suggested use is to take one capsule twenty minutes before breakfast and lunch. The warning label states, recommended usage is equivalent to 3 cups of coffee.

Caffeine is what people use to accelerate their heart rate, a stimulant. When your heart is beating fast and your sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive, eating is probably the last thing your body wants to do. I can say I don't really see a real difference in this and any of the other diet pills out there. The goal of getting your systems so fired up that your forget about eating breakfast and lunch, the two most important meals of the day, is pretty much the same. If you are looking to skip a meal, skip dinner, it should be your lightest meal of the day anyways.

This product contains about 8 % Acai extract, which in my mind makes no sense to name a product after an ingredient that barely exist in the product, but I suppose that would be too much like right to name it what it really is, a stimulant.

If you ever want real Acai, take a trip to Jamaica and find a place that serves Acai and salt fish, Delicious!!!

Quote of the Week

"I think a healthy lifestyle is really important. We're meant to be active and strong. We're not meant to be sedentary creatures who kind of sit at a desk all day." "It's so important to walk home or just take a bike ride because it's how you're connected to your body. It keeps all kinds of health problems at bay."

- Gwenyth Paltrow (aka Pepper from Iron Man 2)

The science of it....

Chiropractic: more you didn't know about what you should know about!
Ronald Pero PhD conducted a study at the University of Lund in Lund, Sweden. His hypothesis was that people with cancer would have a suppressed immune response to a toxic burden, while healthy people and people under chiropractic are should have a relatively enhanced response.
Pero's results: the chiropractic group demonstrated an increase in resistance and susceptibility to disease. Also, they showed 200% greater immune competence than those who did not receive chiropractic care and 400% greater immune response than than people with cancer or other serious diseases. Despite a wide range of ages, the immune response of the chiropractic group did not demonstrate the normal decline with age, it was uniform throughout the group.
Pero's conclusion: "Chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have".

Protect Your Brain
The human brain has one of the highest metabolisms of any organ in the body. This means your brain never truly rests, which means it requires a sufficient supply of nutrients. There is an old saying, "fish is brain food", which has it's truth in the fact that many wild caught fresh water fish contain a high level of omega 3 fatty acids.
Omega 3 acids are a polyunsaturated fat composed of EPA and DHA. Your brain is nearly 60 percent fats, in which a majority are polyunsaturated. These fats cover neurons of the brain and are critical in not only the development of the brain but also the maintenance of brain function.
Low intakes of DHA type fats have been shown to increase the likelihood of depression and increase in DHA type fats have been shown to overcome depression.
There are a few good sources of omega 3 fats out there. The one I use can be purchased from innate choice.

The Love Movement

"there are only two emotions that human kind experiences. . . . fear & love, all others branch directly or indirectly from these two. Fear has a low & slow vibratory frequency while love has a high & fast frequency" E Badu
Often times I wonder the source of our actions/behaviors, are they based in love or fear? It has been my observation that a lack of self-love has contributed to a majority of the ill's of today's society. Particularly the health epidemic of the U.S. When you take a look at depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, childhood obesity, etc. A majority of the health conditions we face are from our lifestyle choices. It's not that you don't know vegetables and fruits are good for you, more than likely it's that you don't consider the destructive nature of: processed "foods" , high fructose corn syrup, table salt, etc. Over the next few weeks, lets do a little research together and see what we discover about the previously mentioned items.
To love yourself is to respect yourself in all areas of life, this includes what you feed yourself physically, mentally and emotionally. There are certain elements necessary to be at your optimal health. Our society is sick for two reasons, we have either a toxicity and/or deficiency in one of the major areas of loving ourselves. The only way to correct a toxicity issue is with purity. The only way to correct a deficiency issue with purity.
Drugs aka "medications" are toxic to the human body. They are a foreign substance that mask the true nature of a symptom (your body expressing intelligence). You have symptoms because your body is at the last stage of fighting some abnormality in your system. All symptoms are bad and most do not require assistance, just no interference.
Lower emotional states (i.e. fear) can be overcome via Love. These lower frequencies can be superseded by those which vibrate at a higher level. Vibration at a higher frequency is often undetectable but nearly always understood. Children are the best detectors of vibratory frequencies. Children are open and receive the necessary information about people through a persons frequency.
Everything on the planet has a vibratory frequency, the higher your frequency, the greater your connection to the universe, the greater your connection to the universe, the better your comprehension of what is around you. Greater comprehension allows for connections, analysis, appropriate responses, etc. eventually arriving at PEACE, the ultimate state of love.

HEROH is a revolutionary call out of love. For you to look at yourself and say "today I chose to be the best me I can be because the world needs me" Lets begin correcting the deficiencies, removing the toxins and replacing them with purity and sufficiency.

Hearts lead, it's your deal!

The Challenge
For 3 days fast from all media. This includes, television, radio, computers, facebook, etc. Take these days and show yourself some love. Cook a few nice healthy meals, exercise, meditate. Basically reconnect with yourself, spend some quiet time with you. Walked barefoot in the grass.

“Revolution requires participation” - T. Kwali

Revolution
defined by the dictionary as: a dramatic and wide-reaching change in the way something works or is organized or in people's ideas about it. We live in marvelous times, with technological developments of all sorts and a greater awareness of our planet in general. However, we have yet to develop the greater awareness of our health and reach or full potential as humans.

Health reform has been applauded throughout the country, conversely we don't have a "healthcare system" to reform. What we have just witnessed is an expansion of a monopolized pharmaceutical sick-care industry and an uppercut punch to the jaw of insurance companies. Let's think about, do we go to a doctor to heal or feel relief from a symptom (i.e. an intelligent response of the body)? Symptom relief from a medical doctor comes in the form of a pill. At some point in time we must consider the fact that our bodies are not in discomfort due to a lack of drugs in our system or extra organs in our bodies, but our lifestyle choices.

There are a few major downfalls when it comes to our health. We can start with nutrition. Research has shown that Vitamin D alone can prevent nearly 4 out of 5 cancers. In addition, it helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, depression, kidney disease, and the seasonal flu. Best of all there are multiple ways to obtain Vitamin D, one of which is absolutely free. The sun is a major source for our bodies creating Vitamin D, via skin exposure to the sun (no sun block/screen,etc). A second source is through supplementation via Vitamin D3. Unfortunately we have been bamboozled for so long about the "dangers" of the sun, most of us are Vitamin D deficient and require a supplement to make up for the deficiency.

THE SEARCH IS OVER !
Optimal Health is the closest we will physically get to becoming one with the universe. A balance of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Often termed wellness, however, the medical confusion has already begun. The medical/pharmaceutical definition of wellness includes taking toxic drugs. This makes no sense at all! How can a drug which causes side effects (sickness within the body) be a logical choice for healing of the body. I heard the most disturbing radio commercial the other day. It was a drug store explaining how you can just "click to wellness" by ordering your drugs online. Being well, doesn't include being medicated/drugged or sedentary.

Chiropractors (those who have excepted the challenge) are the only health care professionals truly equipped to be optimal health/wellness practitioners. Why? you ask, first there are no drugs or surgery involved. Chiropractic focuses on the nervous system which controls and regulates every organ, tissue and function of the body. Chiropractic adjustments/corrections restore proper communication between your brain and body and vice versa.

Chiropractors who are Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioners (CCWP) are specialist in the area of optimal health. The difference between the CCWP’s and pain relief doctors is the intent of the doctor, pain relief vs complete healing. In addition, CCWP's look at the whole, you has a holistic person, being and entity. If you really want to have a life changing health improvement find a CCWP chiropractor. You are what you eat, which effects how you sleep, reflected in how you think, and influences how you move.

Is it the Food?
Recently I purchased the film Food Inc. It’s a documentary on the American food industry which in so many ways is killing us slowly (my opinion supported by facts). Watching this film, I had to applaud myself for not partaking in: the eating of pork, commercial beef, or from the window of a fast food place. This film exposes the conditions of the animals our families are consuming on a daily bases and is truly a sight to make you wonder about all the diseases and other ailments of our society. Food is a transition of universal energy. Animals living in stressed, diseased and caged conditions simply pass that energy to whom or what consumes it.
If you haven't already, viewed the film, rent it. Your family, so feel free to send me your observations and opinions.

THE CHALLENGE

Revolution requires participation, and since you're still reading, we agree it's time for changes to be made. For starters, no fast food and no soda/pop. Not only will your body thank you but your wallet will as well. Yes, we are busy people and sometimes we are in a rush. My suggestion, over the weekend, plan lunch and dinner for the week. Prepare Mon-Wed on Saturday and Thur - Sat on Sunday. Freeze them and when you get home warm them up in the oven (we will discuss the microwave in future blogs). Brown bag it for lunch, or better yet, take a cooler. Lunch should be your largest meal of the day. Eat what you like on one condition, that you eat a hand full of vegetables, salad (next to no dressing), or fruit FIRST. This should be a good starting point.

THE GIFT
I like to pass along snack ideas and recipes. If you don't already have a blender, you may want to look into investing in a good one. I would like to start with dessert (a healthy one).

Banana Split Smoothie
1.5 - 2 Ripe Bananas
hand full of frozen strawberries
hand full of frozen pineapple
1 tablespoon of Raw Cacao Powder
2 tablespoons of agave nectar (if you have a real sweet tooth)
1-2 cup(s) of vanilla hemp milk (based on desired thickness)
